Bathing machines were a device, popular in the 18th and 19th century. They allowed people to change out of their regular clothes into “bathing costumes” and back, without breaking propriety. The idea was to keep the opposite genders from seeing each other in any state of undress. Society rigidly enforced their use by women, but men usually used them too.
