The Burren, County Clare, Ireland, 2013.The barren, rocky landscape of the Burren, striking in otherwise verdant Ireland, is a consequence of glaciation and human activity, overgrazing in particular, which led to the erosion of the thin soil mantle exposing about 250 square km of bare limestone. While much of the surface is sterile rock, in the many small indentations there is an amazing variety of plant life, indeed a majority of Ireland’s native species call this particularly temperate area home. -- source link
