This frame and its companion painting, Trout (1867) by Walter Brackett, are currently undergoing treatment in the BKM Conservation Lab. The pair has been in storage for more than 20 years, accumulating dust and grime. The frame has several losses where cast compo elements are missing—notably along the entire left edge and in the lower left corner. Compo is a paste-like mixture of whiting, size, resin, and linseed oil that is heated and pressed into molds to create three-dimensional forms. Our summer intern, Harry DeBauche, carefully cleaned the frame and has been working to replace the missing sections by taking molds of intact areas and using them to cast new elements. In the coming weeks, Harry will gild the new sections to match the original finish. Check back in a few weeks to see the finished treatment and to learn more about the painting!Posted by Lauren Bradley -- source link
