The Cockettes were a San Francisco-based commune and psychedelic theater troupe whose improvised parodies of torch songs and Broadway shows, coupled with exceptional wardrobes created by members themselves, brought them notoriety in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Famous for producing drag icon Divine and backing up disco legend Sylvester, The Cockettes disbanded in 1972 after a disastrous opening night in New York City drove away much of the crowd, including Angela Lansbury, Andy Warhol, Truman Capote, and Gore Vidal. #lgbthistory #lgbtherstory #lgbttheirstory #gay #bi #lesbian #trans #cockette #pride #thecockettes #divine #sylvester #claygeerdes #angelalansbury #andywarhol #trumancapote #gorevidal #weekend (at San Francisco, California) -- source link
