Joseph Kosuth’s, 276 (On Color Blue), went on view at the Brooklyn Museum soon after it’s acquisition, but then went in to storage in 1996, and has remained off view until now. After 20 years in storage, conservators were faced with the challenge of determining whether or not this neon work made of 25 separate sections was still functioning and could be part of our current exhibition, Infinite Blue. With expert assistance from the Brooklyn Museum electricians, critical advice from Chris Freeman, the original fabricator of this artwork, and Let There be Neon, our go-to local neon fabrication company, and finally incredible patience from the BKM collections management team, we were able to successfully install this powerful work (pun intended).
