bewitchingbritain: Hadrian’s Wall was for centuries the boundary between Brittania (roughly equivalent to the modern countries of England and Wales) and Caledonia (modern day Scotland). Begun in AD 122, during the rule of Emperor Hadrian it was initially built as a fortification to keep out those scary scary Scotsmen the English would later terrorize greatly **ahem** have a spot of bother with. A significant portion of the wall exists today, except for the parts that tourists and construction workers and rock-eating Trolls have taken up. Hadrian’s Wall Path is the most popular tourist destination in northern England; and each year tens of thousands of merry travellers walk, trot, perambulate, stroll, waddle, mince, tip-toe, promenade, meander, ponce, hike, saunter, jig, jog, jiggety-jog, run, dawdle, cartwheel, career, careen, somersault, roll, and cycle alongside it to their heart’s content.
