#145 ZapdosThe jagged silhouette of a Zapdos, juxtaposed in front of rolling black clouds lit up by lightning, is an intimidating sight to behold. These legendary birds roost in hard-to-reach places, far away from and high above most civilized areas, and from their lair, they sustain an endless thunderstorm by flapping their wings, feeding it with wind and electricity. Each flap of a Zapdos’s wings produces enough electricity to blow apart a cottage.Storm Stirrer. Zapdos are reclusive, but will occasionally fly out from their lairs to lead their thunderstorm to another area. By flying in the middle of a storm, they can absorb lightning like a lightning rod to protect people below from errant strikes. Alternatively, a cruel Zapdos can use this ability to fire targeted strikes on the populace below. While the carnage of lightning and thunder can be devastating to some communities, the rainfall brought by these storms can be rejuvenating in areas deprived by drought. Many isolated societies depend on a visiting Zapdos to inaugurate their rainy season.Mythical Inspiration. Among ancient societies, Zapdos are revered as the heralds of storm deities. One legend tells of a thunder goddess who kept several Zapdos in a cage, like canaries. She would release these birds into the sky to stir up thunderstorms, and when the weather quieted, it was a sign that she had called the Zapdos back to her. Another god, worshiped primarily by Dwarves, is said to have snatched lightning out of the sky in his hands and caught the sound of thunder in a jar. He took the lightning and shaped it into the form of a jagged bird, then poured the sound of thunder into its soul, creating Zapdos.
