thestarfishdancer:thestarfishdancer:tametsi-qq:hrefnatheravenqueen:allthecanadianpolitics:Nunavut now has 18 cases of Covid19 after getting its first case a week ago.Nunavut is Canada’s largest sub-region with a sparse population of mostly Indigenous people (~85% Inuit). Its only Hospital is in Iqaluit which is 1300 km away from the majority of the cases (Arviat in the south of the territory):Tagging: @politicsofcanada*please don’t be a repeat of the Spanish Flu in Inuit communities*There’s actually 26 cases of COVID-19 as of today (Monday, Nov 16, 2020). 6 of the cases are from Arviat, and 2 are from Rankin Inlet. Masks are reccommended across Nunavut, but are only manditory in Sanikiluaq and the Kivalliq region. A two week territorial lockdown is starting on Wednesday (Nov 18th, 2020).The Northwest Territories (where I live) has now just closed its “bubble” with Nunavut. We’re also one of the medical “hubs”, so I’m not sure what that’s going to mean for people from the Kitikmeot who need to come here for medical reasons. (I live next to a Larga house, where those traveling are housed while here, for example women in their last month of pregnancy.) It must be very scary and isolating already, to travel away from your community when you need a doctor, and I don’t know what restrictions they will face while here or how exemptions will work when it comes to isolation. I hope there is no more community spread. Stay safe, Nunavummiut! 34 new cases, totalling them to about 60 now. This is devastating. Please keep Nunavummiut in your thoughts.https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/north/covid-19-new-cases-whale-cove-1.5805272 -- source link
