The J.C. White semi automatic prototypesJ. C. White was an engineer who worked with United Shoe Machinery Co. in Massachusetts. In 1929 he entered three prototype rifles of his design for consideration by US Army Ordnance. The three designs were semi automatic rifles with each having its own mechanism.Top: The first is a semi automatic rifle which utilized a toggle lock system similar to the Pedersen rifle which was blowback recoil operated. It used a box magazine similar to the M1 Garand which was fed from and en bloc clip. Middle: The second prototype was a carbine which utilized a gas piston system. It also had a box magazine which used en bloc clips. The White gas piston system would continue to by experimented with by the Springfield Armory, and would form the basis for the gas system utilized by the M1E4 rifle and the later M14.Bottom: The third prototype was intended to be a light machine gun similar to the Browning Automatic Rifle. It is fully automatic firing from an open bolt which is operated by a gas impingement system. It is fed from a 20 round detachable magazine. All three prototypes are chambered for .30-06. The three prototypes were examined in an initial round of testing, however the army already had 6 others prototypes fro Ordnance Board trials. Thus the White prototypes were rejected for further testing. The Ordnance Board trials came down to a competition between the Pedersen Rifle and the M1 Garand, of which the Garand was chosen for acceptance. http://www.rockislandauction.com/viewitem/aid/66/lid/3595http://www.rockislandauction.com/viewitem/aid/66/lid/3597http://www.rockislandauction.com/viewitem/aid/66/lid/3596 -- source link
