The A6 Meunier Rifle,During World War I many of the major powers of the war attempted to design a new and revolutionary semi-automatic rifle design. The Meunier used a long recoil action that was locked by means of a rotating bolt with interrupted-thread locking lugs. The Meunier used a 5 round fixed box magazine, however plans were made to introduce detachable magazines in 5, 10, and 15 rounds. As well a carbine was also planned. The Meunier was chambered for a 7X57mm rimless cartridge based on the 7X57 Mauser. The Meunier was originally submitted for testing by the French Army in 1910, however at the time the military had no interest in semi-automatic designs. It was a shame since such an advanced rifle would have given the French Army an edge in small arms. It wasn’t until 1916 that adoption of the Meunier was reconsidered. By then it was too late for the Meunier. France was deep in World War I, and could not retool it’s arms industry to produce new rifles, nor the ammunition that it used. As a result only 1,000 Meunier rifles were produced, of which 843 were sent to the front lines. -- source link
