banjobutch:Happy birthday, Sun Yat-sen! (November 12, 1866)A celebrated and iconic figure in Chinese history, Sun Yat-sen was a renowned revolutionary leader who played an instrumental role in the overthrow of the Qing dynasty and the establishment of the Republic of China, serving as the country’s first President, although he quickly relinquished the post. As the Republic fractured into warlordism, Sun became the leader of the Kuomintang and began a campaign to reunify China, forging an alliance with the Communist International and Communist Party of China. Sun would die before China was unified, but his political and philosophical legacy continues to resonate both in the People’s Republic of China and in Taiwan. Particularly influential have been his “Three Principles of the People,” considered to be the fundamental tenets of Chinese republicanism.“I am the one who will crush the Qing utterly. With the power of sun and moon I will smash through the boundaries of Helanshan pass. With fire and fury I shall come to the city of the Nanluo kings, and the might of the Yanhuang will rise again.” -- source link
