Of course its the daily mail.I love it when whites act offended by misrepresentation.Umm what?*cups hands around mouth*I said I love itWhen whitesAct offendedBy misrepresentation!!!!!!*Waves my hands really really high* Scots of color exist, hen! I’m one! You’re out of your depth!Oh honey that’s not what this is aboutAssuming that Scottish = white literally reifies racism against Scots of color. Your, “I love it when white people act offended when their culture is misrepresented,” because it happens to be Scottish culture, which for some reason you equate to whiteness, isn’t the racially progressive stick-it-to-white-people moment you think it is.Por favor, have a care. There is that, very much so; and there’s also a history of cultural genocide against the Gaels (the group supposedly represented in this picture). And while nobody is saying that Gaels are currently suffering from systematic racism in the same way as people of colour, there is actually good cause to complain when people continually reduce our culture to these stereotyped images of “savages,” as it’s part of a centuries long attempt to eradicate our culture by denigrating it and confining it to the past. Scots were actually very much spoken about the same way as poc for a long time. To quote bits from the wikipedia page on Anti-Scottish sentiment: “In the 16th century Scotland and particularly the Gaelic speaking Highlands were characterised as lawless, savage and filled with wild Scots. … Nicolaus Hieronymus Gundling proposed that the exotic appearance and cannibalism of the Scottish people made them akin to the savages of Madagascar. … Such ideas were modified to smear Africans as cannibals in the following century in the colonial age.” Again, I repeat that I’m not saying it’s the same for Scots and poc now (or implying that there aren’t Scots of colour), but that maybe before you slam ‘whites’ for complaining about misrepresentation, you should learn something about why this might historically and presently be an issue for this particular group of people.WHAT I ACTUALLY WANTED TO COMMENT ON (before I felt the need to address that debate) was that these savage Highland warriors are bare-chested, which is just wrong. There is a specific battle known as Blàr na Lèine (the Battle of the Shirts), which happened on a hot day so everyone took off their plaids and fought in their shirts. So even when it was really hot (which it doesn’t look like it is in that picture), they wore shirts. It’s rather trivial compared to other issues the choice of that image raises, but I thought it would be a good time for some fun Highland history facts.#it’s not like there’s only room for one social movement at a time in the world#scottish nationalism and black lives matter are not antitheticalIgnoring the historical misinterpretation there that Scotland has been perpetually white/Gaelic (a good chunk of our country is and has been Polish as well, another group that faces everyday racism and historical subjugation) here are just a small number of Scots who represent us in politics and the arts:Also look up the hashtag #wearescotland on Twitter for more :) -- source link
