“When I first heard the definition [of genderqueer]—that there’s no need to be a stereotypical man or stereotypical woman and all the characteristics associated with that and you can be anything in between, in that gender spectrum—now it’s such a simple thing, but at the time it just blew my mind to hear that. I connected with it instantly,” said Chella Man during a talkback with Senior InterseXtions member Anna, 16, during June’s LGBTQ Teen Night, The Genders We Wear. This talk back with deaf genderqueer artist Chella Man, was one of several programs and activities planned by InterseXtions teen staff for our fifth annual LGBTQ Teen Night, hosted on June 8th, 2018. Taking inspiration from David Bowie is, The Genders We Wear welcomed over 225 teens for art-making activities, performances by Tayahna Walcott, Isa Reyes, DJ She Marley Marl and Dynasty, a fashion show with designers Pink Bandanaz along with DIY fashion from Teen Night participants made up an evening of fun, fashion, self expression, education, and community building. This past year, our LGBTQ+ teen internship overall was bigger than ever. With workshops, gallery visits, and peer exchanges with queer and trans artists, organizers, programmers and educators, teen staff were able to explore ideas and identities across and beyond the gender spectrum. In reflecting on joining the program for two years, one senior leader, Isaiah, 17, says, “I wanted to give help and support that I didn’t receive growing up. I wanted to learn about my community, to feel welcomed, and encourage people to feel empowered about being part of the LGBTQ community.” I, like Isaiah, want to support all other LGBTQ+ young people to feel confident in their identities, to understand the amazing legacy of LGBTQ+ artists, organizers, and freedom fighters before and around us, and to imagine and build new worlds. We are excited to continue to explore gender and sexuality in art at the Brooklyn Museum, and support young LGBTQ+ visionaries carve space for themselves and their peers.Applications are open for our 2018-2019 eight month paid LGBTQ+ teen internship, InterseXtions: Gender & Sexuality.
