#Repost @brownenvironmentalist (@get_repost)・・・4/4: Alright! We’ve been uncovering the history of the term ‘tree hugger’, from the Bishnoi to the Chipko Movement. Let’s quickly recap that it was indigenous, Indian Women — the Bishnoi — who were the FIRST tree huggers and gave their lives in doing so, and that their legacy continued in the Chipko movement...Uttarakhand, India: 1973 to 1981..Leading up to the year 1973, Uttarakhand was subject to significant environmental degradation due to commercial logging. The Chipko Movement resulted as a response by the local people to protect their livelihood. Notably, it was NOT ONE but a SERIES of demonstrations against commercial logging that went on for 8 years in separate locations throughout Uttarakhand...The international attention it garnered — alongside the praise it received within India itself that would inspire later movements — comes down to two reasons: ...1. Its element of non violence .2. The leadership and bravery of the Women who stepped forward (day and night) to hug the trees and place themselves between the would be loggers...Eventually, the government would cede and halt any commercial logging for 15 years (some places say permanently, but we don’t think this is the case)...The Women of the Chipko movement would inspire the usage of the term ‘tree huggers’ internationally, morphing and changing until its usage today, and however you may think of the word now. ..What do you think of the Chipko Movement? Comment below. We’ll wrap up with some reflections in our story...ALSO there’s tons of literature on it and we’ve consolidated it. If you want to learn more, DM us. We’ll send it!
