Australian AWAS (Australian Women’s Army Service members) arrive at Lae in New Guinea from the MV Duntroon during the New Guinea Campaign. Disembarked by landing barges, they now wait for trucks to transport them to the AWAS barracks. Formed in 1941, the AWAS was designed to enable men performing military duties on the home front to be able to be deployed to fighting units overseas; their duties now overtaken by women.
