waytoyourheart:Maureen O'Hara & Tyrone Power (The Black Swan, 1942)YESSSS ok so this film has a lot of sexist clichés and is really kind of terrible in its disregard for women’s consent. HOWEVER. When I watched it as a small girl I was blissfully oblivious to a lot of this. I just loved Maureen O’Hara’s patent awesomeness, sassiness, and refusal to be intimidated by pirates (even and especially Tyrone Power.) Captain Jamie (Tyrone Power) had an endearing penchant for taking on impossible obstacles, whether these took the shape of Evil Pirates, English Bureaucracy, or Maureen O’Hara. Of course, he eventually beat the baddies and the bureaucrats, but he never did out-sass Maureen O’Hara. She gradually sheds petticoats (and the constraints of bourgeois society! symbolism!) over the course of the film, and ends up in trousers and a piratical scarf, upbraiding and then snogging Tyrone Power. Also, their final clinch is preceded by him making triply sure that she really wants it, so: he learns about consent, she learns about trousers, and in my mind they live happily ever after swashbuckling through the Spanish Main. THE END. -- source link
