victusinveritas:When this was painted, Southern Europe had only known about America for six years. Northern Europe had known about it since the Vinland expeditions, and perhaps even before that, they just didn’t tell anyone. Nobody believed the Irish fantastic voyage stories, and the Basques just clammed up and stuck with fishing and whaling. The Americas, however, had known about the Americas for quite some time, about fifteen thousand years, give or take a few thousand depending on the latest archaeological evidence. Asia, of course, might have known about America, if you believe Gavin Menzies, which you really shouldn’t, because he is insane and also believes that Atlantis was more than just an allegory made up by Plato to help tell a story. Hell, he probably also believes in Lemuria, Mu, and the Easter Bunny…so…beware of his ‘groundbreaking historical theories that the academic community rejects…with…good reason.’ Still, for all that, Albrecht Durer is and will always be the Renaissance German Darling of my Art Historical heart…a-r-t-history:Albrecht Dürer, Self-Portrait, 1498, oil on panel (via Museo Nacional del Prado) -- source link
