Gebirgs Division) pause before pressing forward during Operation Platinum Fox; an unsuccessful joint German and Finnish operation with the objective of capturing the strategic Soviet Arctic port city of Murmansk in the Barents Sea. Part of the larger Operation Silver Fox in Northern Russia, the Germans and Finns were initially able to gains some ground but were ultimately unable to either capture or cut off Murmansk and Operation Platinum Fox failed after nearly five months.
