English policemen examine the wreckage of a German Messerschmitt Bf 109 which crashed onto Byron Avenue in Margate. The Luftwaffe pilot, 21-year-old Lt. Josef Schauff, lost control of the aircraft on a bombing mission during the Blitz; the German aerial bombing offensive against Britain in 1940 and 1941. Schauff was able to bail out of the aircraft just prior to the crash, but subsequently died of injuries on a playground for the Royal School for Deaf Children and was buried in Margate Cemetery. Margate, Kent, England, U.K. 24 July 1940. -- source link
