harvardfineartslib:Artist’s self-portraitGerman painter PaulaModersohn-Becker (1876-1907) is recognized as one of thefirst female painters to paint a nude self-portrait. In this provocativeself-portrait, Modersohn-Becker painted herself as an expectant mother thoughshe was not pregnant at that time. She painted this self-portrait on her sixthwedding anniversary in 1906, which was after she left her husband, OttoModersohn, and step-daughter in Worpswede, a small artistic community inGermany, to move to Paris to become a serious painter. In this light, herself-portrait begins to tell us a different story. When she arrived in Paris, she wrote: “Now I have left Otto Modersohn, I stand between my old lifeand my new one. What will happen in my new life? And how shall I develop in mynew life? Everything must happen now.”[1]In this painting, Modersohn-Becker expects to givebirth to her creativity, independence, and mature artistic self. The following year in 1907, Modersohn-Beckerreturned to Worpswede, and conceived her first child with Modersohn. But shortlyafter the birth of their daughter, she developed an embolism and died at theage of 31, leaving numerous groundbreaking works behind.
