mimicofmodes:Dressing gown, ca. 1830; brocaded silkMetropolitan Museum of Art 2009.300.2970a, b; Brooklyn Museum Costume Collection at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Gift of the Brooklyn Museum, 2009; Gift of Mr. and Mrs. William Sterling Peters, 1924In contrast to earlier banyans, this dressing gown is quite formal. Not only is it more structured and fitted, providing scarcely more comfort than the coat worn by its owner for the rest of the day, it also came with a matching waistcoat. Like the banyan, though, it was still a statement about the owner’s class status and intellectual interests. -- source link
