As the NYARC Kress Fellow, I received funding to attend the 2017 Art Library Society of North America Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana. My week was packed full of lectures, presentations, and special interest group meetings. Art librarians from across the nation were in attendance, and we discussed subjects such as cyber security, information literacy, libraries as locations of social change, and international communication. I also presented my own research regarding the use of interactive technology for reference services and its popularity on social media. But don’t worry; there was plenty of time for extracurricular activities! Through the ARLIS conference, I attended a group tour of the Joan Mitchell Center in Treme as well as a walking tour of the city with a Professor of Architecture from Tulane University. Our welcoming reception was held at the New Orleans Museum of Art where we ate catfish po’boys and king cake before wandering the gallery halls. We rounded out the trip with a convocation reception at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art accompanied by spicy Jambalaya and sweet potato biscuits. I also visited the Historic New Orleans Collection and saw artifacts from the legendary battle of New Orleans during the War of 1812, as well as visited the Louisiana State Museum to see a moving exhibition on the impact of Hurricane Katrina. On my last day in New Orleans, I was surprised to learn that the first parade of Mardi Gras, Krewe du Vieux, was taking place in the French Quarter. I am extremely grateful to the Kress Foundation for funding this exciting and informative trip to New Orleans. Life really is good in the Big Easy!Posted by Giana Ricci -- source link
