labete-du-gevaudan:These sketches were done by Captain Davidson who ran the steamship Kiushiu-maru. They were done originally for an article in The Graphic, published onJuly 19, 1879. Davidson claimed that the encounter happened 9 miles off of Cape Satano at the Isle of Kiu Siu, Japan. He reported seeing a whale leap out of the ocean, but what was especially strange was that he claimed to see something latched onto the stomach of the whale. The Cape Satano Monster had appeared to be an enormous snake-like creature that was as thick as a ship’s mast. It reared 30 feet out of the water for a few moments before it went back under the water and vanished. -- source link
