August 2015 - New toys for the Hydroponic/Aquaponic systemEveryone talks up Smart Pots, for plants that have roots that benefit from lots of aeration. There’s a variety of DIY options out there, but thought we’d pick one up just to try it out. Same with the fertilizer, great reputation, big price though. Normally we just make up our own fertilizer mixes, but we usually deal with dried materials b/c they’re so much cheaper (you end up paying out the nose for shipping with fluids), but thought we’d try some fluids in any case. The colored discs are for cloning plants, you slip the stems into the hole in the center - they’re reusable AND color coded so I couldn’t really resist. They come in a variety of sizes but this one looked about right. We’re currently cloning some lavender, we may or may not transfer them to these new discs. The Clonex was stupidly is expensive, but it’s considered to be the best cloner on the market. You can use all kinds of materials to clone - cinnamon, aloe, whatever. A little goes a long way. We had some cloner around but it got old and a bit funky. If the price on this had been clearly labeled we wouldn’t have picked it up though, it was a walking-out-the-door purchase.Lastly, is some growing media. It’s a bit coarse for what we’d like, but the price was right. As we use these things in projects I’ll try to remember to take photos. The staff member we talked to at the hydro shop was awesome. Informed, interesting, a doer not a dreamer (unlike so many of the permie kids around here). He also has a homestead with his partner out on some beautiful rural land. -- source link
