The Dinaric Alps from the International Space Station.Shown here in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Dinaric Alpsextend 645km along the coast of the Adriatic Sea. They are made upof limestone and dolomite and have no natural passes, preventingtravel from the coast to the interior. The partially-submergedwestern part of the Alps forms many islands and harbours along theCroatian coast (upper part of the image). Sinkholes and cavernsdominate the landscape. The region is sparsely populated, andforestry and mining are the main economic activities. -- source link
