When I first saw him thought they were a dryad saddle but I’ve never seen one with this dark black stem as you can see it’s totally white inside this was found in Central Missouri today October 12th 2008 Lake of the Ozarks[submitted by @commissioner58]Still looks like dryad’s saddle (Polyporus squamosus) to me! Much darker stems aren’t unusual on older specimens - the dark colouring will spread from the stem to the centre of the cap as the fungi withers, as you can see it doing here. This one looks quite old - you can see it’s become leathery, and much of the scales have washed off, most likely in rain. This specimen is well past edibility in my opinion. -- source link
