I tend to focus primarily on art with the occasional dip into where I stand in regards to politics (which inevitably brings out the Right-wing trolls). This is one of those moments when I break from the art to highlight the dangerous atmosphere and direction the current presidential administration is taking the United States. This is a president that recently accused a 75 year old, Catholic Worker Movement activist, who was violently shoved to the ground by police during a protest, left to lay on the ground with blood pouring out of his ears, as being “antifa” which is a term he’s begun using as a synonym for “terrorist”. Now his campaign site is asking his followers to stand “against antifa” (the double negative here also bothers me). The president of the United States wants you to stand with him AGAINST ANTI-FASCISM. Or, to put this another way, the president of the United States is PRO-FASCIST. Let that sink in. I would suggest taking 5 minutes of your life to watch this brief opinion piece by the philosopher Jason Stanley, who has spent much of his career studying fascism, explaining why calling Donald Trump a “fascist” isn’t the exaggeration it might seem. ‘Is President Trump Fascist?’ I would also suggest this segment from Democracy Now which also features Jason Stanley on ‘How Fascism Works’ Finally, I suggest watching the following lecture by the author Mark Bray who wrote ‘Antifa: The Anti-Fascist Handbook’ explaining what Antifa is, it’s history, and the specific tradition of “militant anti-fascism’. I would suggest that you fuck right off if you object to any of this. Seriously, just don’t bother wasting your time. -- source link
