It’s currently snowing needle snowflakes — a fairly unique type of snowflake which only forms when the temperature is 23° F (-5° C).Although phonetically very similar to “neato snowflakes”, I prefer to call them snow javelins of misfortune, for if you’re unlucky enough to be outside when they start falling, you will surely die.The certainty of your death is twofold— 1) their streamline aerodynamics, which allows them to descend at near-supersonic speeds, and 2) their unimaginably sharp ends — a razor thin point the mere thickness of a water molecule.As deadly as these snowflakes are, there’s an atmospheric phenomenon currently occurring that’s much, MUCH more dangerous… which I plan to discuss in one of my next couple posts. (And no, I’m not talking about icicle missiles, aka missicicles, which occur when the water in a water tower freezes and expands, causing an explosion… impaling city residents with car-size icicles.) -- source link
