Mary I gold medal This medal of Mary I was designed by Jacopo da Trezzo, who was a goldsmith working for Philip II of Spain. It is believed that these medals of Mary I were made to commemorate the marriage of Mary and Philip and to present Mary as Philip’s wife in his dominions. One side of the medal shows Mary I, whilst the other side shows a representation of Peace banishing storm clouds. This medal is the only surviving gold example, as the other surviving medals are all in silver and bronze. It has been suggested that this may be because Philip II had this gold version specially commissioned as a wedding gift to Mary I. -- source link
