Bacon CupThere are three cups known as the Bacon Cups, these are the Redgrave Cup, the Stewkey Cup and the Gorhambury Cup. The pictured cup is the Redgrave Cup. These are known as the Bacon Cups as they were made for Sir Nicholas Bacon. They are particularly special because they are made from the Great Seal of Mary I. When a monarch died or a Lord Chancellor was changed, the Great Seal would have to be defaced and replaced with a new one. A perk of the job for the new Keeper of the Great Seal, was to be given the old seal, which was usually melted down to make commemorative items such as these. The reason Bacon had three cups made was so that his sons could each inherit one of the cups. The cup is topped with the emblem of the family, a boar. -- source link
