NEW Cultural Landscape Report for Chancellorsville BattlefieldThe National Park Service Olmsted Center for Landscape Preservation has announced publication of the Cultural Landscape Report for Chancellorsville Battlefield, Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park. The research and analysis presented in this report help us to understand what happened on this landscape, how the site has evolved since the Civil War, and how to manage the landscape to best preserve and enhance the historic character.Early morning fog clings to the rolling hills at the site of Stonewall Jackson’s famed flank attack on the Chancellorsville Battlefield (NPS Photo).Chancellorsville Battlefield is a landscape where tangled woods meet cleared fields, and trails and roads mark the lines of battle while also conveying the commemorative gestures of past generations.In May of 1863, the rural agricultural community was transformed as massive armies clashed at the Battle of Chancellorsville. While the landscape carries traces of the dramatic impacts of the battle, it also represents how the nation has preserved and interpreted the legacy of these events. The cultural landscape report (CLR) documents this significant history and serves as a tool for park resource managers of today and tomorrow.The Chancellorsville Inn Site Existing Conditions Plan Detail is one of the drawings prepared for the Cultural Landscape Report for Chancellorsville Battlefield (Drawn by John Auwaerter for CLR, NPS/OCLP image).The CLR is the result of a collaborative effort between staff at Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park in Virginia, State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry, and the Olmsted Center for Landscape Preservation. It guides the ongoing stewardship and management of Chancellorsville Battlefield, one of the park’s cultural landscapes.
