renaissance-art:Saint Catherine of Alexandria was believed to be a fourth century princess martyred for her faith during the reign of Maxentius. Despite Christianity being outlawed by the emperor, Catherine converted after experiencing a vision from God. Renowned for her intellect and wisdom she openly debated pagan philosophers, and those who witnessed her became believers. Artistic depictions most commonly show Catherine with a wheel as Maxentius attempted to execute her on a spiked wheel, which shattered upon Catherine’s touch. Ultimately, she was beheaded and the angels lifted her into heaven. Today, Catherine is a patron saint of students, philosophers, and professions associated with learning. -- source link
