romegreeceart:Quintus Fabius Maximus Verrucosus Cunctator - the Shield of RomeRoman dictator who used a novel military strategy against Hannibal’s army during the second Punic war. He avoided pitched battles and fought instead war of attrition against Carthaginian forces (harassing supply lines, small skirmishes etc). At first the dictator’s compatriots didn’t appreciate this cautious and un-Roman approach and hence the scornful nickname Cunctator (=delayer). Subsequently opinions changed though and the general was called “the shield of Rome”source: schurl50, Wikimedia Commons -- source link
