The della Robbia workshop’s formulas for their glazed terracotta remained a family secret for close to a century. The workshop’s founder, Luca della Robbia, developed a process which combined calcium-rich clay with a glazing technique that created a luminous, durable, and clearly readable form of sculpture. This new method of sculpture was well suited for architectural ornamentation, like the Resurrection which was probably displayed above an exterior doorway. [Detail:] Giovanni della Robbia (Italian, Florentine, 1469-1529/30). Resurrection of Christ, ca. 1520-1525. Glazed terracotta. Creative Commons-BY -- source link
