artmastered:Arch of Constantine, Rome, c.315ADThe Arch of Constantine is a Roman triumphal arch located at the east end of the Roman Forum, next to the Colosseum. It was built to commemorate the Battle of Milvian Bridge in 312AD, where the Emperor Constantine defeated Maxientus. The arch is often condemned by art historians for its use of spolia (reused materials, usually taken from earlier buildings or monuments) from the ages of Hadrian, Trajan and Marcus Aurelius. This use of existing materials seems to indicate a lack of both artistic development and skill in the arch’s construction. Edward Gibbon (1737-94) even claimed that the arch signified the decline of art after the period of classical antiquity and before the Italian Renaissance.(own images) -- source link
