Labour Day had been celebrated on 1st May ever since 1890. Italy had been one of the first countries to follow the appeal of the Second Internationale to use 1st May for actions to improve working conditions. The Fascist regime had abolished the celebration, but immediately after the war it was reintroduced. In that same year 1945, on 11 March, Pope Pius XII received for the first time in audience the Catholic Action of Italian Workers, (ACLI) officially recognizing it and putting it under the patronage of St Joseph.> Photo: An ACLI delegation presents Pope Pius XII with a hammer and trowel to open the Holy Door for the Jubilee Year 1950. -- source link
