Deadly Lawn Darts,Plumbatae were basically large darts used in combat in the ancient world. They had fletchings to stabilize them in flight and a lead weight in the front to ensure that the dart would always land with the deadly point down. While they were originally used by the Greeks, it was the Romans who would put them to the most use. By the later 4th century AD, many Roman legions had traded in their throwing javelins for plumatae for several reasons. First they were lighter, easier to carry, and could be carried in greater numbers. They would often be found clipped to a Roman soldiers shield where they could be easily accesed and enemy barbarians would often be met with a shower of plumbatae in battle. Secondly and most importantly, they were cheaper, a must for an ailing empire that was on its way to total collapse. -- source link
