DON’T- Look at too many outlines. A lot of 1L time is wasted on “acquiring” good outlines from others when I think that you really do learn more by making your own. Especially if you get some outdated outlines it might confuse you.- Have the outline be your only study tool. People learn in different ways. If you would learn better in other ways, do that. - Have too long or too short an outline (if you will, have both). DO- Use the syllabus and/or casebook as the starting point. It’ll help you see the big picture.- Make sure that you know the “long” version well. Meaning, yes, the short outline might be a good check list for remembering that you know something, but on test day do you know how to explain that issue? Apply it? - Make your own outline. It does help you learn better. You can use other people’s outlines as reference but you should, at least in 1L year, try to make your own.- Try hand-creating your outline. Trust me, try it. It’ll help you realize what’s important and also help with retention. -- source link
