Manzanita (madroño), Sierra Madre Occidental, México, 1996.Thanks to the several who responded to my question about the upper picture when I posted it a week or so ago. I should have guessed, for the trees are close relatives of shrubs and trees which grow along the Western Coast of North America from Mexico north to British Columbia. Variously called manzanita, madrone, and arbutus, those shrubs and trees, like the Mexican ones shown above, are members of the genus Arctostaphylos, and many of them share an attractive, copper colored bark. -- source link
