The Model 1882 Swiss Ordnance Revolver,During the early 1800’s the M1882 Swiss Ordnance Revolver was perhaps the most advance military sidearm of its time. A six shot revolver, the M1882 was the standard sidearm of the Swiss Army well into the early 20th century until it was replaced with the P.08 Luger. It was designed by Col. Rudolph Schmidt, also known for designing the Schmidt-Rubin series of straight pull bolt action military rifles. The M1882 was like most six shot revolvers in some aspects, for one it was loaded by hand one cartridge at a time through a loading gate in the rate hand side of the pistol. Empty casing were ejected one at a time using an ejection rod, much like the M1873 single action army. However, this fine revolver had two things going for it that set it ahead of the rest. First, it was a double action revolver, meaning that the hammer did not need cocked to fire, just pull the trigger. While double actions were coming into their own at the time, they were still a rare find in military’s, overshadowed by the single action. Secondly, most revolvers of the time used high caliber low velocity cartridges. The M1882 used a low caliber high velocity cartridge called the 7.5mm Swiss, a cartridge with a power comparable to that of the modern .357 magnum. An excellent sturdy design, the M1882 served the Swiss well into the 20th century. Official use ended in 1964. Around 30,000 were produced. -- source link
