5.2x68mm Mondragon,Developed by Swiss Colonel Eduard Rubin in 1894, the 5.2x68mm Mondragon was a high velocity small caliber cartridge designed for use in the Mondragon Rifle. The Mondragon Rifle was one of the first automatic military rifles invented by Manuel Mondragon in 1887. Initially the rifle was manufactured by SIG arms of Switzerland because the Mexicans did not have the manufacturing capability to produce them. As a result, the Swiss experimented with different calibers and cartridge concepts for the new rifle. The 5.2x68 Mondragon is special because it uses smokeless powders, which was quickly replacing black powder during the era. The small caliber cartridge had an increadible velocity, impressive considering that pretty much all other military cartridges of the time were large caliber low velocity sluggers. Its bullet was also mostly seated with in the cartridge casing, reducing length and reducing the stroke length of the action, thus increasing firepower. Unfortunatly the Mexican Government decided to adopt the 8x57Mauser cartridge for the Mondragon Rifle, which was a common caliber produced in Germany.Source: cartridgecollector.com tircollection.com -- source link
