The Meadowlands Apparently much of the United States will be spending today preparing for and then observing a sporting match held in the large facility at the center of this image, taken by NASA’s EO-1 satellite on January 30th. The dark areas that didn’t hold much snow in this image are the “meadows” themselves. They are low-lying marsh areas, supplied with water by the nearby Hackensack River. If you look at the river’s path, you can see how the river has meandered east and west in its history. From the top of this image, the river meanders to the east and then back to the west – this portion is close to where you see the “meadows”. Prior to settlement, when the river would flood, occasionally it would breach its banks and establish a new path through these areas. The low-lying marshes sit on sediments deposited as the river meanders back and forth…the stadium sits there as well.#Superbowl#Superb_Owl -JBB Image credit: NASAhttp://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/IOTD/view.php?id=83007 -- source link
