bestofboxing:May 18, 1956: Sugar Ray Robinson KO 4 Carl (Bobo) Olson, Los Angeles. Retains World Middleweight Title.A young Muhammad Ali emulated the movement and boxing trunks of his “master and idol”, but nobody could replicate the eccentric ring genius of Sugar Ray Robinson, probably the pound-for-pound greatest of all time, who fought 200 professional fights and won title belts at welterweight and middleweight. He fought his lifelong nemesis Jake LaMotta six times and won 5 out of those 6 fights (of course Hollywood chose to celebrate LaMotta with the Robert DeNiro classic “Raging Bull”). Robinson was also a tap dancer and entertainer who supposedly was the first to develop the modern sports entourage. Unfortunately, he blew through the millions he made in the ring and died destitute in 1989. -- source link
