Japanese Flying Squid The Japanese flying squid, or Pacific Flying Squid, is a squid that lives in the northern Pacific Ocean, areas surrounding japan, China, and even Russia, “then spreading across the Bering Strait east towards the southern coast of Alaska and Canada”. They are known to cluster around the central region of Vietnam. “Flying squid have been observed to cover distances as long as 30mabove the surface of the water, presumably to avoid predators or save energy as they migrate across vast expanses of ocean, uniquely utilizing jet-propelled aerial locomotion.” They have rings around the back of the head that are used to determine how old they are. They are small and light weight. These squid have a lifespan of only a year, and prefer to live in cooler waters. They are found in waters usually less than 27 degrees Celsius. They die after they mate. -- source link
