I am bigI am smallI am wideI am tallI am fastI am loudI am lightI am freeI am more than what you seeI am more, I am more I am more than what you SEEA few Sundays ago, this refrain echoed loudly from the Brooklyn Museum’s fifth floor rotunda. Local poet, MC, and performance art therapist Queen GodIs visited our F.A.M. (Family Art Magic) program for a workshop exploring the theme of power animals and spirit guides. Our class began by looking at artifacts from indigenous cultures and shamanistic traditions from across the world, exploring just a few of the ways that people have looked to animals for healing, wisdom, and knowledge. In many instances, shamans, healers, and performers would not only wear animal-inspired relics, but also danced, vocalized and evoked the energy of animal spirits to help heal their communities. Following our discussion, kids and their grownups worked with Queen to make their hybrid animal masks come alive with roars and power-moves. This workshop ultimately reminded our participants that we all have our own inner power to share, and when anyone tries to put us down, we can all say, “I AM MORE THAN WHAT YOU SEE!” Children ages 4-6 and their grownups are invited to join in more family fun this winter! Registration for F.A.M.’s winter semester opens on November 15th at 10 am.Posted by Deena Bak -- source link
