I got turned into a meme I dont understand@explainingthejokeThe images are a series of screenshots from the TV show Voltron, with screenshots of text posts superimposed onto them to make it seem like the Voltron characters are saying the things in the posts. The text posts are of two Tumblr users (firebreathingeli and actualscience) quoting Romeo and Juliet, a play by William Shakespeare. The conversation in the play is among several characters who hate each other and would like to fight; but they have fought so often in the past that if they do fight, they’ll be in trouble with the law. The Tumblr users have turned the conversation into one between two people. The language is in old English. I’ll put some explanations in brackets next to the lines that I’ve been asked about. The conversation, as the two users have acted it out, goes like this: person A: Do you bite your thumb at us, sir? [Biting your thumb used to be a sign of great disrespect. A professor of mine once compared it to the middle finger in the United States. A saw B bite their thumb and confronted them about it.]person B: i do bite my thumb, sir person A: Do you bite your thumb at us, sir? person B: is the law on our side if i say ay? [”Will we be safe from getting in trouble if I say yes?”]person A: No person B: no, sir, i do not bite my thumb at you, sir; but i bite my thumb, sir [”Then I’m not biting my thumb at you, I’m just biting it in general.”] person A: Do you quarrel, sir? [”Do you have a problem?” i.e. Do you want to fight?]person B: quarrel, sir? no, sir. if you do, sir, i am for you. i serve as good a man as you [”I don’t have a problem. But if you want to fight, I can fight. My boss is just as good as yours.”] person A: No better. [”Not any better, though.”] person B: well, sir Here is where the two users started to deviate a little more from the script in the play. They basically did what I did above, which is translate the language into modern English, but they spelled and phrased it as if it were in old English. I was asked about these parts too, so I put explanations here as well. It goes like this: person A: DOST THOU WANT TO FUCKING GO, SIR? [”Do you want to fucking fight?”] person B: DOST THOU THINK THOU CAN FUCKING TAKE ME, BRO? [”Do you think you can fucking take me, bro?”] person A: DOST THOU EVEN HOIST? OUT TO THE COURT YARD, WITH HASTE. [”Do you even lift?” i.e. Do you work out like I do? “Let’s go outside, now.”] These two people were just having fun joking around with a play they both knew. The OP of this post took that conversation and put it with Volton because they like that show and think two characters from Voltron might have a conversation like that. One of the people from the original conversation found this post; it seems like they haven’t seen Voltron and don’t know those characters, so they don’t understand why their conversation was put on Voltron screenshots. love ur blog but thats not old english thats early modern english -- source link
