Associate Conservator Angela Duckwall addresses our spindles with un-fired whorls—pieces which need extra protection because of the fragile nature of the un-fired clay. Duckwall wraps the whorls in polyethylene and creates a template to align them in a Volara tray. She then carves negative space out of the Volara to accommodate the size of the whorls, and secures them with twill tape to prevent shifting in transit. We hope in the future to be able to further stabilize these fragile whorls in our new conservation facility. Spindles and implements, Peru, central coast. TM 1979.47.8A-T.
