saphhoria:Gothic Americana Ask MemeSend me an American Gothic and I’ll tell you a story made of true things.Remember if curiosity killed the cat, satisfaction brought it back.Appalachian, I love this! When I go hiking in the late afternoon, even when the sun is still shining on, albeit hung low in the sky, I can end up in thick spots where it suddenly turns night. I’ve been on summer hikes at 5 PM that spit me out onto paths covered by a canopy so dense it may as well be midnight. The forests where I live are middle-growth, put back 60 years ago to replace the open-floored, old-growth forests that came and went long before I ever stepped foot on any of their trails, and long before there even were trails, anyway. So everything is so big, and thick. The thorns, the trees, the brambles and bugs. And everything is so new.Bobcats just came back after years gone, and black bears too.Everything feels like it’s been this way forever, but everything also feels brand new, young, and like it’s at a pivotal moment of transitioning. So each and every hike that ends up somewhere deeper than I meant to go does feel like the forest is on some level saying, “I just got here after a long time gone, and everything that used to fill me is finding its way back. I’m alive and I’m moving, everything In me fresh and awake. What waits for you in the dark?” -- source link
