silentambassadors:On this date in 1653, Oliver Cromwell declared himself Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England, Scotland, and Ireland, a position (purely his own) that lasted until his death in 1658. There is not, interestingly, a stamp with Cromwell on it, although events leading up to his ascendancy as Lord Protector are commemorated on the Civil War series, and the Stuart kings who flank him are shown above. Two years after his death, his body (or somebody’s body, at any rate) was exhumed and posthumously executed as one of the first royal orders by Charles II, a strange sort of ritual, even for the English.Stamp details:Stamps on top:Issued on: June 16, 1992From: London, EnglandSG #1620-1623Stamps on bottom:Issued on: June 15, 2010From: London, EnglandMC #2965-2966 -- source link
