Xiomara Batista is a character that is so diverse and has somuch depth and substance; you will not want to put this novel, in verse,down. Her struggles become so real tothe readers as her feelings of being unheard are juxtaposed with her desire toactually hide from all the unwanted attention she gets for her womanly curvesin her Harlem neighborhood.In addition to this inner conflict, Xiomara encountersconflict with her strict religious mother at every turn. To say the least, her mother does not approveof Xiomara’s lax attitude toward the church and her preparation for theSacrament of Confirmation. Xiomara,whose fierceness is like a punch in the face throughout the novel, is determinedto live life on her terms and cleverly finds ways around her mother’s strictrules. On top of this, there is, ofcourse, a love interest, Aman. With so many things roiling within her, it is bound to cometo a head.
